Coral Gardens

from $60.00

Coral reefs provide shelter to many organisms, including juvenile fish, crabs, snails, worms and nudibranchs. They also attract sharks, rays, and other larger predators. Not only do they serve as important breeding grounds, but their structures also protect our coastline from tropical storms.

Coral Gardens

Each year, a few days after the full moon in November, corals synchronise the release of their sperm and eggs. This is called coral spawning, where coral polyps release millions of teeny tiny eggs and sperm bundles for fertilisation, creating a beautiful underwater spectacle.

Hawaiian people consider coral to be an akua. An akua is a god that possesses much mana, the essence of spirituality. They are the most ancient ancestors of all living things in Hawai‘i, thought to be responsible for the cycle of life and death. Coral reefs provide habitat crucial for many species' survival, and coral polyps are considered to be the very beginning of life.

Each image is printed on a 100% cotton fibre rag, an archival museum quality material with a vibrant finish.
